a. Note:   Orphaned, washed up on some shore, name tag "Eli Bishop", picked up by somebody Granstaff adopted.-- according to family tradition. From the Smith County History (1987): says it was "Eli J." Family would have it "Eli B." Louise Winfree, in her notes, also puts Eli J. The tradition about "Eli Biship" remains mysterious.
