  2(5). Wiley Denney was born about 1794 in Person County, North Carolina. He married Clara "Clary" Enoch around 1817. She was born in 1800 in North Carolina. The 1820 Census of Smith County shows Wiley as a father with two sons under 10 in his household and living in the New Middleton area. In the first non-census reference to Wiley in the Smith County Court records he was serving on the jury for the State of Tennessee Versus Nathaniel Roundtree on August 26, 1824. By 1826 he was established on the Elk Fork of Mulherrin Creek. Wiley received two state grants and amassed considerable land in the area. Before long it was being referred to as the Denney Settlement, as a number of his children lived in homes around his plantation. Today, the Elk Fork of Mulherrin Creek is known as Denney's Branch. By 1828, Wiley and Clara were members of the Brush Creek Baptist Church. He was a witness in a nasty divorce case in 1833, just one year after the legislature began to allow Tennessee Courts to grant them. In February 1835, the court found against Wiley, Thomas Walker, and John Baker in favor of the Chairman of the Board of Common Schools Committee. Later in the same year, Wiley sold 100 acres to J.B. Moores and Francis H. Gordon on which Clinton College was established. The main building to the college survived until the construction of Interstate 40 in the 1960's. The 1837 and 1838 tax lists of District 17 show Wiley owning 100 acres. He lived until 1869 and was survived by his wife Clara, who remained on the farm until May 4, 1887, when she was killed in a freak attack by a fighting ram.
