Note: Matthew, I have just printed out all the data you sent which I will enjoy reading & processing + bookmarked the webpage, etc. and will be anxious to check them out. Glad to hear from you & will get back as soon as possible. I will need to get my Van Hook & Newman data organized. Frances (Newman) Van Hook-Hickman and daughter, Martha Ann Hickman sold Wilson Co land & many possessions soon after the Civil War when son, William Caswell Hickman (my Great-grandfather) & son, Dr. Zachariah Hickman came to TN to take them back to their homes. Frances youngest son, Jacob Snowden died at St Petersburg, VA in 1863 & buried in Blandford Cemetery. Frances had been a widow several years before the war started, Snowden Jr died in the late Spring of 1852. Martha Ann would continue to live with brother Dr. Zach & family in Benton(Franklin)IL; Frances lived with William C. & family at Cross Timbers(Hickory)MO, she is buried in a small cemetery near C. T. I have Newman information that will be interesting to double check with you. Dear Matthew, Several years ago Gloria(Hickman) Scott from Spfld., MO sent me copies of 4 pictures she had taken while on a research to Lebanon. I will make you a copy of the page, altho the copies will not be crisp. She had written the directions as being 3 miles SW of Lebanon & that the place was owned by Mignon(Van Hook)Wilson in 1973. One shot is labeled as "This was the original part of the house, one room downstairs and one upstairs; Side view: The boys of the family sometimes climbed throught the upstairs window onto a limb of this tree to get to the ground. (Home where William C. Hickman was reared); This log smokehouse is probably the same one in which Frances Hickman and her daughter (Martha Ann) dug up the dirt floor to get a small quantity of salt during the Civil War. Before the Civil War the widow Frances & daughter Martha Ann (1841 & 1934) young Jacob Snowden "Babe"(1843-1863) were living alone. Frances two Van Hook children Joel N. & Winnie J. had married & rearing young families in Wilson Co. Lucy Hickman had married Jesse W. Rowlett & had 5 young children in Wilson Co. William Caswell Hickman (1832-1912)/my ancestor/had settled in Hickory Co MO in 1857; brother Dr. Zachariah Hickman had moved to Southern ILL by 1861. After the beginning of the war Jacob Snowden ran away from home & joined the Conf. Army - he was a war prisoner with measles & died 1863, St. Petersburg, VA & buried Blandsford Cemetery there. Wm. C. & Zach were Union soldiers. "After the Civil War was over Frances & Martha Ann disposed of the farm in TN leaving there with only $600, a wagonload of things she refused to give up, and a fine black mare, which they led behind the wagon. William Caswell drove, Zach rode a horse & Frances & Martha were in the wagon. They came to Benton(Franklin)IL, rested a few days, then went on to William's place in MO." These were family memories dictatd to the granddaughters of Dr. Zach Hickman by their father Frank Johnson Hickman, 1946. Frances lived with William's family until her death in 1882. Martha lived with brother Zach & family in IL for her life. Some clues concerning their move (from T. Partlow's book) 1866, Oct 13: Frances Hickman & Martha A. Hickman of Franklin Co, IL appoint Zachariah Hickman their power of attorney to see thier interest in a tract of land belonging to the heirs of Snoden Hickman. 1868, Oct 30: Frances Hickman & Martha Ann Hickman to Lawerence Sypert a tract of land, Dist 22. Other heirs: W. C. Hickman; J. W. Rowlett & wife Lucy & Z. Hickman. 1882, Feb 13: William C. Hickman to E. B. Hickman 12 acres in the 11th Dist. Betty Betty Hickman Minnick, 1720 Grandview Ave., Glendale, CA 91201-1208. 1866 William C. & brother, Dr. Zachariah Hickman returned to Wilson Co TN to take their widowed mother, Frances and younger sister, Martha Ann out of the devastated south. Frances disposed of the Hickman family farm in Wilson county, leaving with $600.00, a wagonload of things she refused to give up, and a fine black mare, which they led behind the wagon. William drove, Zachariah rode a horse and Frances & Martha Ann were in the wagon. They arrived at the Benton(Franklin)IL home of Dr. Zach, resting a few days, then to Hickory county MO. Martha Ann "Aunt Matt" remained in IL and Frances continued to MO and lived out her days with son, William's family. She is buried in Walker Cemetery, located about 2 miles north of Cross Timbers, her grave marker reads: "Frances Hickman, wife of Snowden 1800-1882." In 1871 William still had the black mare he had led from his old home in TN. This mare was a thoroughbred and Will had shown her colts at the State Fair, where they took many ribbons. 5394 - 1853 May 10 -(Petition) Petition of Joel N. VANHOOK, admr. of Snowden HICKMAN, dec'd. against Jessee W. ROWLET and his wife, Lucy, formerly Lucy HICKMAN, William C. HICKMAN, Zachariah HICKMAN, Martha Ann HICKMAN, Jacob S. HICKMAN and Francis HICKMAN all of Wilson Co., TN, except William C. HICKMAN non resident of TN. Snowden HICKMAN died intestate in Wilson Co., TN in the early part of 1852 ... widow, Francis and 5 children all under 21 except Lucy ROWLET. Prior to his death Francis filed a bill of divorce ... they compromised and he gave her a deed of gift during her life ... remainder to children ... 6/7ths.
