a. Note:   The 1860 Census has a John Rice, 23 married to a Jane, 22, and son Robb, 1. It is very likely this is the same John Rice listed in the tree. There is no one else named John listed in the census married to a Rebecca or Jane. The only John W. Rice I could find (so far) is found in the Guardian Settlements 1851-1856, Wilson County, (Thomas E. Partlow, comp. Wilson County, Tn, Miscellaneous Records 1800-1875 (Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1982), p. 51:
  James Rice Guardian. Guardian of Sallie Ann, JOHN WESLEY, James Harvey, and William Pitts Rice, the minor heirs of Patricia Rice who was a daughter of John Baird. Wilson Baird, the administrator of John Baird. Recorded 18 September 1854.

  James was at least 18 on June 19, 1828 because he was witness to the will of Hugh Gwynn (Thomas E. Partlow, comp., Wilson County, TN, Wills Books 1-13, 1802-1850 (Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1981), 79. The next year (above) he married Patricia Beard. His parents were probably the William and Esther Rice who wrote a will recorded Feb. 10, 1832 (p. 93 heirs, Esther, wife; daughters: Susanna, Sarah, Esther, Rebecca Rice; sons: Nathanial, JAMES RICE; Wit. John and Margaret Hannah; Exec. wife Esther, son Henry Rice, Thomas Telford. Notation: Henry Rice deceased [will recorded 11/21/29, p. 82 James a wit. too] James was one of the adms.) William may be a brother (or some relative) to John Rice (will p. 42) and son to Jacob Rice (adm. to a John Caplinger inventory, Jan. 14, 1819, p. 30). Susannah may have died unmarried (p. 139 Settlement; 19 Jan. 1848).
  Another important bit of information is that a James Rice (probably not Annie's grandfather however since he probably was dead already, but this can be wrong too) lived next to (or own land next to) Joel N. Van Hook, Annie Rice's father-in-law. (Thomas E. Partlow, comp. Wilson County, Tn, Trust Deed Books 1868-1894 (Lebanon, Tn: Partlow, 1996), 7 "Joel N. Vanhook to James Rice [Annie would have an Uncle James) 50 acres in the 21st dist. as deed of a trust. . . . east by James Rice. . .17 Oct. 1868."
