a. Note:   Gottlob Off was a native of Germany and educated in his native land. He immigrated to America in 1845 and located in Indianapolis, serving 2 yrs as a cabinet-maker's apprentice. In 1861 he enlisted in the US Army in Company E, 11th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry and served 3 mos before joining his brothers in the saw mill business. Gottlob also farmed during this time.
 On Nov. 26, 1865, Gottlob married Minnie Grosse in Indianapolis. They had 5 children, and he was a member of the Order of Druids and the G.A.R.
 In 1871, he sold his interest in the saw mill and began clearing a farm in Cicero Twp., Tipton County, IN. Mr. Off purchased 160 acres of ground, 100 acres tillable.
