Notes
a. Note:   JACOB OOSTERHUIS FAMILY
by Leone Holkeboer/ Arthur VanHouten (compiled by Erin Heuker)
Jacob was born April 15, 1815 and died May 24. 1888. He married Fokkelena Boonstra, who was born June 1819 and died Nov. 10, 1897.
Jacob was a gardener in the Netherlands. They left the Netherlands for economic improvement. They were members of the church of the Seceders. They came with Dominie Duiker, who had accepted a call to be Dominie at Spring Street Church in Grand Rapids and persuaded a group of people to go to America with him. Jacob was 51 years old when he came to America with 4 unmarried children (we think maybe Ubel, Rose, John and Henry). Rose was about 18 years old. Daughter Bertha and husband Bertrand Formsma with their three children came on the same boat. Klaas and family came at a later date. . They emigrated to America in 1867 from Nieuwzijl, Groningen, Netherlands out of Grejpakerk (port?) on a steamboat. They started May 16 and arrived in the US in June. They were fortunate enough to get passage on a steamship, and in twelve days they were in New York under the leadership of the minister.
They were soon in Grand Rapids, and Rose secured employment at housework with a certain Mrs. Comstock, the founder of Comstock Park. One could not understand the other, but still they got along very well.
