  In 1919 James Ewing Gardner married Mildred Janet Bourne, whom he met while attending UC Berkeley. She was friends with his sister, Ruth. The marriage takes place in the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Oakland, Alameda County, California.

  Beverly Gardner Van Polen:
 "Mildred and James Ewing Gardner lived on a ranch in Capell until 1933, where she cooked for the family, the ranch hands and the many relatives who came to visit. The ranch became a kind of vacation retreat for the Napa Gardners and Ewings, etc. They lived on a ranch in Capell until 1932. Their neighbors were the Grigsbys. When I was born, they couldn't think of a name so I left the hospital unnamed. When they visited the Grigsbys it was they who suggested "Beverly." Note: The Grigsby family was one of the first pioneer families in Napa.

 The family moves to the house on Seminary Street, living in the back part of the house, while the James Buchanan Gardner family lives in the main section.
  Beverly Gardner Van Polen:
 "He worked all his life for the Federal Land Bank out of Oakland appraising ranches in California and Nevada. We kids would travel with him and sit and wait in the car, play games, get home schooling, or we would go to the cemeteries to read the funny grave markers. He was an athelete with a sense of humor.
