Note: Born Dec 17, 1799; died Oct 17 1901. "Had the rare distinction of living in three centuries. " Thompson Sackett Barnes (1799-1901) was born in Panton, Vermont, and brought up in South Schroon, New York. March 21, 1824 -- Thompson married Jane Potts Talbot. They lived in South Schroon for a few years from 1824 to 1830. Their first four children were born in South Schroon: Edward Martin Barnes in 1825 Dennis Edwin Barnes in 1827 Samuel Cook and Sarah Ann Barnes (twins) in 1829. In 1830 the family moved from South Schroon to Olmsteadville, Essex County, New York. Seven more children were born to Thompson and Jane: Benjamin Coe Barnes in 1832 Margaret Thompson Barnes in 1834 Laura Amelia Barnes in 1836 Lucy Jane Barnes in 1838 Charles Talbot Barnes in 1840 Wesley Barnes in 1842 William Hall Barnes in 1844 "Eleven children in all and all survived to grow up and marry. Many went west." In 1846 Jane's father, Edward Talbot, sells Thompson Sackett two acres of land and the mills in Minerva, Essex, New York (just northwest of Olmsteadville). 1850 US Census -- Minerva, Essex, New York Thompson Barnes age 50, a farmer with real estate valued at $2000, Jane Talbot Barnes age 40 Edward Barnes age 25, a laborer with real estate valued $850; Dennis Barnes age 23, a laborer with real estate valued $800 Samuel Barnes age 21, a laborer Sally Barnes age 21, Samuel's twin sister Benjamin Coe Barnes age 19, a laborer Margaret Barnes age 16 Laura Barnes age 14 Charles Barnes age 9 Wesley Barnes age 7 William Barnes age 5 July of 1852 -- Edward Martin Barnes marries Adeline Willis in Olmsteadville, NY. November 1852 - Sarah Ann Barnes marries Woodward Willis. May of 1853 -- Dennis Edwin Barnes marries Cornelia Foster. Abt 1855 - Laura Amelia Barnes marries Charles A. Rice, b. 1829 New York. They move to Grand Rapids, Michigan 1858 -- Benjamin Coe Barnes age 27, has become a Methodist minister in Iowa. He marries Rosanna (Rosa) Johnston, b. 1832 in Millersburg, Pennsylvania. Benjamin will live and raise his family in various small towns in Iowa. Sept 1859 -- Samuel Cook Barnes marries Margaret Hare 1860--Thompson sells an interest in the business to each of his eldest 3 sons (Edward, Dennis & Samuel), "who had helped in the mills since they were 17, 19 and 21. Dennis operated the grist mill. 21 September 1861 - Dennis Edwin Barnes enlisted as a Captain at the age of 34, Commission in Company C, 93rd Infantry Regiment, NY on 07 December 1861. Charles Talbot Barnes enlisted at the same time and served in the same regiment. Both enlisted for three years. Soon after enlistment Charles was promoted from private to 5th sergeant and again to Orderly Sergeant of the company at the time of the battle of Fredericksburg, May 3d to 5th, 1862. Reenlisting as a veteran after two years service, he was promoted to 2d Lieutenant in 1863. (The roster of Minerva men also included Private James Barnes and Private Edward Talbot (Jane's nephew) Abt 1863 - Wesley Barnes marries Julia Vosburgh May 6 1864 - Dennis Barnes is killed fighting with Company C, 93rd Regiment in Wilderness, Virginia. Charles Talbot Barnes was severely wounded at the battle of the Wilderness, May 5th 1864. He was then promoted to 1st Lieutenant Sept. 20 1864 and discharged in December, 1864 on account of his wound at the Wilderness. On Oct. 23rd 1865, Charles was promoted to rank of Brevet Captain for gallant and meritorious conduct in service. 1870 US Census -- Minerva, Essex, New York Thompson Barnes age 70, with real estate $3500, personal property: $1000 Jane Talbot Barnes age 66 William Barnes age 24, farmhand, Thompson and Jane's youngest son, Maller, Celia age 19, at home, born NY, parents born Germany. Abt 1876 - Charles Talbot Barnes marries Marion Ashby. 1878 - Adeline Willis, wife of Edward Martin Barnes, dies. Their children (Laura age 14 and Willis age 6) go to live with Thompson and Jane. January 1880-Thompson's wife, Jane Potts Talbot Barnes, dies. Thompson, age 80 relies on Celia Maller Sherman to run the household. Celia is from Germany, possibly a servant in 1870. She is now married, with a daughter of her own, age 6. Her husband is not listed as a member of the household. 1880 US Census -- Minerva, Essex, NY Thomas S. Barnes age 80, Farmer Laura Barnes age 16, granddaughter (daughter of E.M. Barnes and Adeline Willis) Willis Barnes age 8, grandson, (son of Edward Martin Barnes and Adeline Willis-- Adeline died in 1878 and Edward M. dies in 1902 in Nebraska Celia Sherman age 30, keeping house (the same Celia Maller from 1870 Census--now married?) Lillian Sherman age 6 1882 William Barnes age 36, the youngest son, marries Minerva McKoun 1900 US CENSUS, Minerva, Essex, NY Thompson S. Barnes age 100 Wesley Barnes age 59 Julia Barnes age 56 Charles Barnes age 32, son of Wesley & Julia, Helen Barnes age 19, daughter of Wesley & Julia Florence Barnes age 14, daughter of Wesley & Julia Catherine Sullivan age 36, (Katie Elizabeth) daughter of Wesley & Julia who married W H. Sullivan Addie Sullivan age 13, daughter of Katie E. Barnes and W. H. Sullivan Charles Sullivan age 12, son of Katie E. Barnes and William H. Sullivan Morton Sullivan age 11, son of Katie E. Barnes and William H. Sullivan October 1901 - Thompson Sackett Barnes dies, age 101.
