Note: Servaas emigrated to the US at the age of twenty in 1891. In 1892 he married Junna (Jennie) DeLooff. Jennie emigrated in 1890. The couple's first child died. In March of 1893 Kathleen (Lena) was born. The 1900 Census for Grand Rapids, Kent, Michigan (E. Fulton St. Dwelling 144) lists Servaas Vertregt, age 28, Naturalized, Painter, speaks English. Junna, age 26, has not been naturalized and speaks only Dutch. Their daughter Lena is age 7. Jennie (Junna) dies on April 30, 1902, at age 26. Kathleen is 9 yrs old at this time. In 1905, Servaas remarries to Adriana Verhock, age 31 (her first marriage). Adriana was born in Michigan. Her parents were born in the Netherlands. She is buried in Fulton St. Cemetery. On May 29, 1909 a William E. Vertregt dies & is buried in Fulton St. Cemetery next to Jennie DeLooff. Relation to Servaas Vertregt is unknown. Possibly his father? The 1910 Federal Census -- Grand Rapids, Fulton Street, lists Servaas, age 38, Foreman House Painting; Adriana, age 36; Kathleen, age 16, Milliner, Hat Shop; Elizabeth, age 4; Wilhelmina, age 2 (named for Servaas' father); and Marcellus, age 10 mo. (named for Adriana's father). Another Vertregt is listed in this same census in Grand Rapids--Martinus P. Vertregt, age 31, is listed with a wife, Alice, age 42. His 2 boys, born 1906, died 1908, are listed in Fulton St. Cemetery. The relationship between Martinus and Servaas is unknown. The 1920 Federal Census -- Grand Rapids shows Kathleen, age 26, is no longer living in the household. All Servaas' other children are listed. In 1935, Servaas Jr. dies at the age of 24, leaving a widow (Elizabeth) and a son (Willie). Servaas Sr. dies February 5, 1969 at age 97. He is buried in Fulton St. Cemetery, lot 26A, Block 11 Grave 1. Adriana dies ten days later (February 15) at age 96. She is buried in Fulton St. Cemetery lot 26A, Grave 2 OBITUARY in Grand Rapids Herald, Feb 4, 1969: Servaas M. Vertregt, aged 97, formerly of 1147 Sherman St. SE, passed away late Monday afternoon at Blodgett Memorial Hospital. Surviving are his wife, Adrianna; three daughters and three sons. Mrs. Kathleen Levy of Calif., Mrs. Floris (Elizabeth) VanderStoep, Mrs. Thomas (Wilhelmina) VanderMey, Marcellus and Govert, all of Grand Rapids, Henry of Grosse Paoint Park; a daughter-in-law Mrs. Servaas M. (Elizabeth) Vertregt Jr. of Grand Rapids; 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren. Internment Fulton St. Cemetery. OBITUARY in Grand Rapids Press, Feb 4 1969: Servaas M. Vertregt, 97, of 1147 Sherman St. SE, former owner of a painting and decorating business, died Monday at Blodgett Memorial Hospital. Born in the Netherlands, Mr. Vertregt came to grand Rapids at 18 and ran his business 62 years, retiring at 80. He was a charter member and elder of the Sherman Street Christian Reformed Church and served on the Baxter Christian School Board.
