Note: Hubert Sandner's grandfather Wilhelm Sandner (he went by William Sander during WWI for obvious reasons) emigrated from Germany to Australia as a pioneer. Australia at this time was a British Penal Colony, but this ended when there was an Australian gold rush. Wilhelm owned a business in Sandhurst Australia: SANDER & SONS EUCALYPTI EXTRACT--for internal and external use. The product was sold to the Listerine Company and around the world. Hubert's father died at the age of 32. His grandfather retired to Berkeley because it reminded him of Sydney. Hubert's mother sent Hubert and his brothers, Victor and Adolf to Berkeley. They spent 22 days on a ship. Their grandfather took them in and paid for their education. They hated his housekeeper, and moved to a YMCA as soon as they could. Their mother emigrated to Berkeley when her own mother died. The boys moved in with their mother into a house on Delaware Street just about the same time the Gardners moved to Delaware Street. James Buchanan was involved in real estate at the time. Amilie dabbled a bit in real estate as well. She had an apartment house and rented units. Hubert would play piano and she would sing.
