Note: BIOGRAPHY IN HISTORY OF NAPA AND SOLANO COUNTIES A name well known in Napa county is that of Geroge Frank Gardner. He was born in Wooden Valley September 8, 1855, a son of George gordon and Sarah T. (Rice) Gardner, the former a native of Arkansas, and a descendant of an old southern family. The senior Gardner served in the Mexican war and came to California in 1949, soon returning to Arkansas. Later he came again to California, where he remained a short time. He then went to Tennessee and was there married and in 1852, with his bride, came to the Pacific coast, crossing the plains with ox teams and soon afterward settled in Napa county, where he reared his family and where he died in 1881. His wife was of German ancestry and through the Dodsons becme connected with that Rice family so well known in Tennessee. The children born to G. G. Gardner and wife were George F., John H., J. Irvine: Time of writing: 1904 A native son of California, George Frank Gardner was born in Wooden Valley, Napa County on the 8th of September, 1855. His parents were George Gordon and Sarah T. (Rice) Gardner, the former a native of Arkansas and the latter of Tennessee. In the paternal line he is descended from an old southern family. In the maternal line, George F. Gardner is of German lineage. His mother bore the maiden name of the Sarah T. Rice. Her mother, who was a Miss Dodson, was born in the United States and became a member of the Rice family by marriage, which was celebrated in Tennessee. On the 17th of November, 1880, in Soscol Valley, Napa county, Mr. Gardner was united in marriage to Miss Dora Hill, a daughter of James Hill, a pioneer farmer of California, who came to the state in 1852. Mr. and Mrs. Gardner have three sons. In his political affiliations, Mr. Gardner is a Democrat. He belongs to several fraternal organizations, including the Improved Order of Red Men, the Native Sons of the Golden West and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He is also identified with all branches of Odd Fellowship, and his wife, very prominent in the ladies' auxilliary of that fraternity, is now the vice president of the Rebekah Assembly of California. CENSUS INFORMATION FOR GEORGE FRANK GARDNER The 1900 United States Federal Census -- Napa, Napa, California lists George F Gardener, age 43, married 20 years, county treasurer, tax collector; Dora L Gardener, age 41; J Ernest Gardener, age 17, salesman, drug store; G Cecil Gardener, age 15, at school; and Edgar F Gardener, age 13, at school. The 1910 United States Federal Census -- Napa Ward 5, Napa, California lists George F Gardner, age 54, Cigar store Clerk; Dora Gardner, age 51, parents b. KY, 3 children, married 21 years; Cecil Gardner, age 25, Liveryman.
