Notes
a. Note:   from letter written by James Buchanan Gardner:
"John Rice owned a large plantation in Tennessee, in Riceville, named for his family where he owned the store. On the plantation they produced about everything they needed. Raised their own corn for bread and stock fee. Tobacco for use and sale. Cotton and sheep from which they spun the yarn and wove it into cloth for their clothes. Tanned leather and made it into shoes and harness. Raised hogs for bacon and drove to Georgia every fall for profit. Raised their fruit and vegetables, staples and filled the cellar for winter use and knew no such thing as want. Owned 50 negroes who with his sons did all the work in the store and plantation. Each negro family had their own house and land where they could raise anything they wished for themselves. He (John Rice) had a shooting lodge in the Cumberland Mountains of 2000 acres for pleasure. Mother's aunt and uncles all belonged to the well to do plantation owners and farmers."
Tabitha Jane Dodson Rice died in 1839 in childbirth of 12th child. John Rice apparently died of "fever" July 25, 1854. Both John and Tabitha are buried in the family plot on their farm in Riceville, McMinn, TN.
