Notes
a. Note:   George's father James was one of the early settlers in the area. Family legend has it they were right behind the Donner Party, the last to get through on the Southern Route. But the letters sent by James and his wife to their friends and relatives back home have been kept, and no mention of the Donners. The Hill wagon train was first led by James' brother Wesley, but he died of cholera. There were several deaths along the trail due to this disease. James Hill took charge of Wesley's children and the train.
The Hills came over with 400 cattle. Indians stole 50 head in Nevada but they had no time to go after them as winter was coming. One of the Hills had come to California before the trek and had spoken with General Vallejo and gotten a deed for land (1852).
Someone in the family retraced the Hill family Route and in places the ruts from all the wagons are still visible.
