Note: from England Census 1841: The Ewings were a mining family in Carlisle Cumberland England. Samuel Ewing 50 b. 1791 in Scotland Agnes Ewing 40 b. 1801 in Cumberland, England. (Marthe Ewing 18 b 1823 in Carlisle) Peter Ewing 16 b. 1825 in Cumberland James Ewing 13 b. 1828 in Cumberland Jane Ewing 10 b. 1831 in Cumberland Christian Ewing (F) 8 b. 1833 in Cumberland Samuel Ewings 4 b. 1838 in St. Mary's parish, Cumberland Samuel is an iron miner. According to Willam Gardner, Samuel has a brother, name unknown, who is a superintendent of one of the iron mines. 5 children are listed in the 1841 Census, Marthe, the eldest daughter is missing here. In later census, Marthe Ewing, a shopkeeper, lives with her mother Agnes. In the 1851 England census, James Davidson Ewing has married Mary Ann Alison and they are living in Hensingham, Cumberland, England. He works as an Iron Miner. The couple has a 1 month old baby, Agnes. A visitor Ann Thompson from Workington is also listed. Have not yet found the other family members in the 1851 England Census. In the 1861 England census, AGNES, age 59, lives with her unmarried daughter Marthe, age 38, on Charlotte Street in Caldewgate (St. Mary parish), Carlisle, Cumberland. Agnes is a washerwoman and Martha is a cotton weaver. They have a boarder, Catherine Ryan, age 25, born in Scotland, who is also a cotton weaver. Catherine has a son William, age 5. In the 1861 England census, SAMUEL EWING, James' youngest brother, now age 22, is a blacksmith in St. Cuthbert, Upperby, Cumberland. His wife Mary is 24, born abt. 1837, in Upperby. They have no children yet. In the 1861 England census Jane Ewing, b. 1823 Wigton is living in Whitehaven (St. John parish), Hensingham, Cumberland. She is formerly an iron miner's wife. It is possible (likely?) her husband was PETER EWING, James' older brother. Later AGNES Ewing will join this household, so they must be related in some way. Family members listed in the household in 1861: Jane Ewing 38 b. abt 1823, Wigton John Ewing 12 (coal miner) b. abt 1849, Hensingham (Peter Ewing 10 b. abt 1851 Hensingham) Elizabeth Ewing 7 b. abt 1854, Hensingham James Ewing 5 b. abt 1856 William Ewing 2 b. abt 1859 In the 1871 England Census, AGNES EWING, widow, age 69, lives in Whitehaven (St. John parish) with her daughter Marthe, age 48, a shopkeeper. Also in the household are John, James and William from the above household 10 years older. There now appears to be a Peter Ewing, age 19 also born in Hensington. I'm assuming he a the brother who happened not to be listed in the 1861 census. One assumes that their mother has died and the children now live with their grandmother, AGNES, and Aunt MARTHE. In the 1871 England Census, SAMUEL EWING (2) and his wife Mary now have three children in Upperby. He is now a Foreman and Engine Smith. (The railroads have come to Carlisle) Samuel Ewing 32 b. abt 1839 in Carlisle Mary Ewing 35 b. abt 1836 in Upperby Susannah Ewing 9 b. abt 1862 in Upperby Peter J. Ewing 7 b. abt 1864 in Upperby Margery A. Ewing 5 b. abt 1866 in Upperby
