a. Note:   N576 Robert Vans Agnew’s correct surname was AGNEW, his father having assumed the name of AGNEW at his marriage. Robert christened all his children – Vans (ref the family bible in which he recorded this action and which is in my possession). I believe that his children did the same but that most future generations called themselves by the surname VANS AGNEW until my father, Patrick Alexander Vans of Barnbarroch returned to the name VANS in 1965. In the marriage record he seems to have called himself Robert Agnew VANS
 Named Robert Vans Agnew in his father’s will, the Vans added as an afterthought, perhaps at his request.
  1793 - The undersigned Inhabitants of the Town of Ashburton [Devon] desirous of shewing their attachment to their King and Country by promoting the present armament:- Have resolved to [there follows an encomium to volunteer for Naval service and the promise to pay bounties to anyone so doing.
