Note: N2272 THE SHERMAN GENEALOGY (supra) page 14 has the following about some of these SHERMANS pertinent to this PALMER history: “CAPTAIN JOHN SHERMAN came to Watertown, Mass., with his mother, GRACE ROGERS (then wife of THOMAS ROGERS) and her husband about 1636. He lived and died there. He was the ancestor among others of: “Hon. ROGER SHERMAN, signer of the Declaration of Independence and United States Senator ROGER SHERMAN BALDWIN. “The Hon. SAMUEL SHERMAN, brother of Rev. JOHN SHERMAN, came about 1634 from Dedham with his father, EDMUND SHERMAN, who died at New Haven, Conn. 1641. He lived at Watertown and Boston, Mass. and then in Connecticut at Wethersfield, Stratford and Fairfield where he died 1700. His descendants included General W1LL1AM TECUMSEH SHERMAN and United States Senator (and Secretary of State) JOHN SHERMAN. “Rev. JOHN SHERMAN came in the ship ‘Elizabeth’ which sailed from Ipswich the end of April 1634, when he was aged twenty; he settled first at Watertown, Mass., then in Milord, Conn. and thereafter in New Haven, and finally back again to Watertown where he died 1685.” Captain JOHN SHERMAN. the emigrant, married MARTHA PALMER, dau of WILLIAM PALMER of Hampton, N.H. (see page 825 herein). In addition to his being the ancestor of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, ROGER SHERMAN (born 1721 Newton, Mass., d 1793) Captain JOHN was the ancestor of DOLLY and NANCY LAMB down through his daughter, MARTHA SHERMAN (b 21 Feb 1639/40) who married at Watertown 26 Sept 1661 FRANCIS BOWMAN, which line eventually married into the GARFIELD line.
