 Whenever I'm in the area, I try to do some reading at the Kansas Historical Museum
 and library. This time I looked through the Girard newspaper from the late 1800s for
 wedding announcements of some of the Barkdull children, including Caroline. Sure enough,
 the note confirms the 1881 date, and it also notes that the groom, Eldridge Van Winkle,
 is from Henry County, Missouri.
 By chance, the library has microfilm of the 1880 federal census for
 Henry County. Scanning through the whole list shows two 'nests' of Van Winkles,
 one in Shawnee township and another in Deer Creek township.
 And he is in Deer Creek township, along with five other Van Winkles.
 The older one has Kentucky and Virginia roots, but the other four, including
 Eldridge, appear to be brothers. All were born in Illinois, and all have both
 parents born in Indiana. They range in age from 30 to 43.
 Eldridge Van Winkle is a 43-yr old widower with four children:
 Laura (15), Newton (13), Wm.R (11), and Frank
 (8). The three older children were born in Missouri, while Frank was
 born in Missouri. So the family came to
 Missouri between 1869 and 1872. The children's mother was born in Missouri.
