!Abraham and his son-in-law John Shambaugh built the new brick schoolhouse in Hursh town when the old frame building was torn down. - as told by Sally Hursh to Lynn Sewell in 2007.
*************************************** Hi, Laura, There were two Franklins. The first died as a child and the next was Franklin Sigel. The genealogy I got from from Sarah Hursh has 1. Margaret b. 1834, 2. John 1856-1870,3. Franklin 1857-1858,4. David W. b Feb 1858,5. Alice Minerva b July 10, 1860,6. Mary Etta b 1886, 7. Alvin Frank. b 1868-died 8. Franklin S(Sigel is from the dates on the census),9 Daniel C b 1874 10. Beryl- no date,11 Sigel-no date, 11. Unknown. The 1900 census Allen Co,IN says there were 10 children , 4 living. However members of the family there were 12 children in all and 7 died. So there may have been only 10 children, I think now that Franklin P from Welfley is Franklin S on the genealogy. The German custom renamed the children that died usually to the next male if it was a male that died, but I think VanZiles were originally Dutch as the family was from NY. Remember Welfley was not always correct. Sometimes he could not read what was sent to him. There was a Daniel and a David, and the census dates and the genealogy dates don't match. Either the census taker was wrong or the genealogy that was sent was wrong. I did fix Mary Elizabeth and Mary Francis. See my new posting on the Steele My Family site. Sarah Hursh that sent me the genealogy is a descendent of Alice Minerva Vanzile. I believe that the Hursh family and the VanZiles lived on adjacent farms. Can you find a land plot for about 1850 for that part of Allen Co at the library? As for the John VanZiles, I am really confused also now that I look at my family tree. I have to dig out the genealogy that she sent as it is in my file to be filed( if you know what I mean). She just sent me the first page where Abraham and Mary Elizabeth were married last week and it is on the top of the pile and not with the rest of it. I can not explain why she has the first John deceased before 1870 when he is on the census so the family may have alot of errors in their genealogy.
When I started my journey through the Steeles I have 13 George Steeles. I did get an e-mail that the Allen Co Rootsweb will look up an obit for Guy A Steele who was my uncle and a policeman in Ft. Wayne.
By the way, How are you? I am tired. My daughter,Teresa and family were here for 5 days. They left this morning. Olivia is now 11 and Kristen is 8. Her husband is a teacher and they were on spring break. We tried to cram as much as we could in the short time they were here.
Lynn ----- Original Message ----- From: Laura Steele To: Lynn and Bill Sewell Sent: Saturday, March 31, 2007 11:17 AM Subject: I have VanZiles coming out of my ears... Hi Lynn, I was looking at your VanZile stuff and you just blew me out of the water. On the Abraham and Mary Elizabeth family you show 2 Franklins (Franklin and Franklin S./Siegel) and Welfley showed a Franklin P. and a Siegel. I finally got my head wrapped around that one but then along came the Johns... Welfley shows one John and you gave me b. in 1856 and d. in 1864. Then you list another John as b. in 1864. What family re-uses names? Didn't they know how hard it would be for people like us to track them a hundred and fifty years later? What were they thinking?? Did they really like the names Franklin and John or what? O.K., sorry, my rant got away from me for a second there... So - the first John died in 1864 and they decided to name their son b. in 1864 for the one that they lost? Is that right?
Also, you list a David/Daniel William VanZile. Welfley lists both a David and a Daniel... I am so confused. Welfley lists: Margaret VanZill b. 1-9-1854, David, Alice, Mary Etta, Franklin P., John, Beryl, Sigel and Daniel. A total of 9 children. You list: Margaret, John, Franklin, David/Daniel, Alice, John, Beryl, Mary Etta, Alvin Franklin, Samuel, Franklin S./Siegel, and Unknown. A total of 11. Sometimes Welfley didn't list children who had died before the books publish date of 1907. Is that why the number of children differs? Please help me out of this if you get the chance... Thanks and have a great Easter!! Laura
