a. Note:   Joseph William's mother, originally Martha Birch, married a second time after her husband Thomas Murfin died. She married Thomas Shaw. Joseph William Murfin, her son, then took the name Shaw and later descendants adhered to the name, though it is not their birthright. Joseph William is called Shaw in the census returns and his children all called Shaw, though when he married Rosetta Biggin in 1880 his name is given as Murfin, probably because he had not changed his name legally. His father's name on the marriage certificate is given as Thomas Murfin, coachman. Rosetta Biggin's father is given as Charles Biggin, filecutter, of Hemsworth (Norton). The witnesses were Clara Eliza Biggin and Charles Thomas Rogers - these two married in 1881.
