  LOCAL BOXER AMAYA PASSES AWAY AT AGE 82
  CORPUS CHRISTI — Famed Corpus Christi boxer Joe Amaya died Wednesday at the age of 82.
  Amaya fought professionally from 1946 to 1950, going 23-4-1 with 15 knockouts. As an amateur, Amaya won the Texas State Championship.
  Amaya also served in the Air Force and retired from CCAD after 35 years in the service.
  Visitation is 4-9 p.m. Friday at Memorial Holly Chapel with a Holy Rosary at 7 p.m.
  Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Holly Chapel with entombment to follow at Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

  AMAYA
  Joe G. Amaya, age 82, was called home by our Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2011 with his loving family by his side. He was born in Corpus Christi, on February 21, 1929 to the late Jose M. and Maria Luz Amaya. Joe served in the United States Air Force and retired from CCAD after 35 years of service. Joe was also a local boxer and obtained the Texas State Championship. He is preceded in death by his parents, one son, Johnny Amaya, sisters, Lucy Vargas, Herlinda Amaya, Olidia Amaya and one brother, Eugenio Amaya. He will be missed dearly by all his family and friends. Joe leaves behind his family to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 59 years, Rafaela Amaya; one son, Roy (Laura) Amaya; four daughters, Linda Rodriguez, Irma (Jorge) Pena, Irene Amaya and Norma (Reymundo) Cano all of Corpus Christi; thirteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Inez Amaya. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 3, 2011 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Funeraria Del Angel-Memorial Holly Chapel with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. that same evening. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at Funeraria Del Angel-Memorial Holly Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with entombment to follow at Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Honoring him as pallbearers will be; J.J. Rodriguez, Robert Thompson, Jr., J.R. Pena, Johnny Amaya, Erik Gonzalez, Joel Amaya, Ray Cano, Joe Robert Thompson.
