a. Note:   ildren for pension. Samuel was a corporal in Capt. W.W.Warner's Company C of the 11th Infantry Volunteers of Iowa. He died after being released from Libby Prison on board a transport between Aikens Landing and Ft. Monroe on the James River in VA. He was taken prisoner of war in the battle of Pittsburg Landing 6 APR 1862 and died as a result of imprisonment by Confederate forces during the Civil War.

  1860 Census of Bloomfield, Winneshiek, Iowa, pg. 14, entry # 96 shows Samuel F Brush, age 40, Farmer with $800 real estate and $200 personal estate, born in Canada West, with three children in the household: Theod.P. (Thomas P.) age 17, Julia S. age 16, and Amos (Amza) A., age 11, all born in New York.
 Living in residence #97 is his younger brother, Ira O. and his family. Residence # 98 contains the McMartin family of 7 young men between the ages of 20 and 34 and 19 yr old Julia. One of them is Julia Sophia's future husband, Daniel A. McMartin. Houses # 99, 100 and 101 are the Grahams, the Ableman family and the Polly family, all of whom eventually married into the Brush family. All are from Canada by way of New York prior to arriving in Iowa and may have traveled as a group. Not too far away in residences # 10, 11 and 14 are the Grandy and Cole families, also from Canada and New York.
  Samuel was raised in Ontario until his parents moved to Stockholm, St. Lawrence co., New York. After marrying in Stockholm, he and his wife, Theodocia, went to Johnstown Center, Rock Co., Wisconsin where in 1850 they are listed as a family of five. In 1851 they continued on to Iowa. In addition to the children mentioned (Thomas P., Julia Sophia, Amzy A, Samuel and Monola) they had twin daughters who died as infants.
  Samuel enrolled in the Civil War at Postville, Allamakee Co., Iowa on 25 Sep 1861 in Company C., 11th Regiment of the Iowa Volunteers. He was mustered in as a corporal on 25 Nov 1861. On 1 Nov 1862 it was reported that Samuel "died on the James River". He was on a vessel between Aiken Landing and Fort Monroe on the James River, having been recently liberated from the Confederate Prison Camp in Macon, Georgia according to the documents in his file. He was "buried at sea" in the immediate vicinity of the battle betwen the Monitor and the Merrimack, which had occured in March of that same year.
