 !18. 1895 state census of Iowa shows her as widowed, 80 years of age, and born in Ohio, living with her son, Edward Lewis Boyer in Salt Creek Twp., Tama County, Iowa.
  Mary Crane is a sister of Dr. Edward Lewis Crane of Miami Co., Ohio who md. Sarah Ann Woodward- both being children of Abraham Crane and Phebe Winans from New Jersey who moved to Ohio in the early 1800s. Edward Lewis and Sarah Ann Crane were near neighbors to the Jonathan Boyer family.
 Family tradition has her name as Mary Ellen Crane, but her name on her marriage certificate is simply Mary Crane. Other records of the Crane family show her as Maria.
  Census records show that she was born in Ohio.
 On the 1880 Census for Salt Creek, Tama, Iowa,[FHL film # 1254365, NA film # T9-0365. pg. 579A], Mary Boyer, widow, age 66, born in Ohio with both parents listed as being born in Pennsylvania (they were actually born in New Jersey), is living at home as head of household with son, Harvey [E. Harvey on family records], age 22, born in Iowa and working as a harness maker. His father was born in Maryland and his mother in Ohio.
