Historical Society, Mesa FHL# 975.5392 H2g pgs. 21, 30, 133; a John Thomas received a land patent 28 Sep 1728 granted by the Virginia Council. In 1738, John Thomas was paid 50 lbs. of tobacco for setting up a "Post of Direction" at a county crossroad.
  17 Mar 1756, John and Susannah Thomas of Brunswick parish, King George County, Virginia, leased property from Thomas and Jane Lucas of Orange County, Virginia, on the side of Doubletop Mountain [Culpeper Deed Book B, pp 421-425]. This property was sold by John Thomas III and his wife Susannah in 1796. The price for this property included 40 pound of feathers. On 16 Nov 1756, John and Susannah Thomas execute another lease/release as residents of Culpeper County. [Culpeper Deed Book C, pp. 4-10].
  In 1754, John and Susannah Thomas of King George County sold to William Berryman of Washington parish, Westmoreland County, 170 acres in the upper end of Westmoreland County, which was sold by the said John Thomas's [John Thomas I] grandfather, John Thomas, to Robert Peck in 1710. [This deed is missing]. The witnesses for the signatures of John and Susannah Thomas include Jeremiah Kirk [presumed son-in-law of John who married Ann Thomas]. [Westmoreland Deeds and Wills, 1753-56, pp. 164-66]
  In 1742, John and Susannah Thomas of Washington Parish, Westmoreland County, leased land in Brunswick parish, King George County. [King George Deeds Book 2, pp. 455-456] Their son Benjamin is also named in this document.
  Deeds of gift were executed by John Thomas I in February 1782 and 1783 to the following individuals: Granson Reuben Thomas,[witnessed by Jesse and Massey Thomas]; Grandson Jesse Thomas, son of John Thomas II [witnessed by Richard Dickin and Massey Thomas];and son John Thomas II [witnesses Jesse and Massey Thomas]. In February 1783, he executed another deed of gift to Grandson, William Thomas who was then living in Sullivan County, North Carolina.
  John Thomas began buying land in Culpeper County about 1753 at which time he was of King George County. His son Benjamin's first purchase was in 1749.
 17 Mar 1756 he leased from William Lucas and wife Jane of Orange County [ At that time he was of Brunswick parish, King George County], 205 acres on the south side of Robinson River on the side of Double Top Mountain for 90 pounds current money and 40 pounds of feathers. [Culpeper County Deeds Book B pp 421-22 - this land was later in the possession of his grandson John, [son of deceased son Massey]; 16 Nov 1756 he purchased land from Robert King Planter and wife Mary. He is of Culpeper at this date.
  In King George Deed Book 2, pp 455-56 there is an indenture made 1 July 1742 by John Thomas of Washington Parish in Westmoreland County in which he leases land from William Newton of Brunswick Parish in King George County. There is reference to John's now wife Susannah and his son Benjamin.
  In 1754 John Thomas of King George County disposes of property in Westmoreland County originally owned by his grandfather John Thomas. The deed is signed by both John and his wife Susannah who was examined separately for the release of her dower. Their signatures were witnessed by Jeremiah Kirk [presumably the husband of their daughter, Ann].
  His will dated 29 Apr 1782 reads as follows:
  In the name of God Amen I John Thomas of the county of culpeper & parish of Bromfield being of Sound mind of disposing Judgment and calling to mind the uncertainty of this transitory life that all flesh must yield to death when it is plese god to call, do make and ordain this my last Will and testament in manner following.
  My soul I recommend to Almighty god who gave it me trusting in the merits of a merciful Mediator whose precious blood on the Cross was spilled for sinners who truly repented--
  My Body I give to the Earth from whence it came, to be buried in such deasent manner as the discreation of my Executors hereafter named shall direct and the Worldly Goods with which it has pleased god to bless me with after my Just debts are paid I give and bestow in manner following--
  Item I give and bequeath to Grandson in Law who married my grand Daughter Susanna now residing in Maryland to him and his heirs forever a negro girl named Winney--
  Item it is my will and desire that my old negro Woman Jude being the first negro I possessed and now too old and infirm for Labour may not be disturbed of compelled to sereve but remain free and unmolested the remainder of her life--
  I Constitute and apoint my son John Thomas, my Grandson John Thomas son of Massey and William Wallace Executors to this my last will and testament--
  And Lastly I revoke, declare void and of no effect all former wills by me made and do declare this to be my last Will and Testament the word (or) being interlined on second side before signing Witness my hand this twenty ninth day of April one thousand seven hundred and Eighty two

  This Last will & Testament of John Thomas deceased was Exhibited to the Court by John Thomas & John Thomas Junr two of the heirs therein named and was proved by the oaths of Henry James & William Lewis Witnesses thereto & Ordered to be Recorded, And on the motion of the said Executors Certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form they having made Oath thereto & given bond of Security according to Law Liberty being reserved for the other Executor to Qualify when he may think fit--
  Our John Thomas is not to be confused with a contemporary John Thomas who had a wife Sarah and was part of the Germanna colony.
