Notes
a. Note:   lizabeth. There is no indication that he had been married previously as a lease recorded in Culpeper County 18 Sep 1753 for John Thomas and wife Betty refers to this couple. [Culpeper Deed Book B, pp. 65-67] At that time he was of Culpeper County and seems to have preceded his father in settling in that county. His older brother, Benjamin Thomas, executed a three life lease with his wife Katharine and daughter Elizabeth in Culpeper County in 1749 for land located on the Hughes River, [Culpeper Deed Book A p. 12] and John may have come with them.
On 24 Dec 1754 he and his wife executed a lease/release with Phillip Rootes for the above stated property. [Culpeper Deed Book B,pp 229-231] The original transaction was with Benjamin and Rachel Rush. John's daughter, Jemina, married a Benjamin Rush who may have been part of this family.
John died between Sep 23 and Oct 24, 1793 when his will was presented for probate by his son George Thomas and his son-in-law, Joshua Barlor or Barlow. His heirs were Jesse [who had relacted to Roan County, North Carolina by 1795]; Massa [who probably is the Massey who married Dicey Talbot in Sullivan County, North Carolina and later settled in Kentucky] (Revolutionary War Widow's Pension File W8785); Elisha [who probably married Leanne Zigler in Madison County in 1788]; George [who served as his executor]; William [who is probably the grandson living in Sullivan County, North Carolina in 1783 when he received a deed of gift from John Thomas I]; Betsy; Rhoda; and Jemina. Rhoda was married to Joshua Barlor in 1789 and Jemina to Benjamin Rush. [Madison County Deed Book 2, pp 335-336]
John Thomas II's estate was finally settled in 1829 when George presented an accounting which left $3,333.04 to be divided between the legatees. George died in 1839 leaving a widow Lucy.
The will of his father states:
Imprimis I give & bestow to my son John Thomas one negro man Harry and one negro woman Jude to him and his heirs forever--
John's heirs were his widow Elizabeth and his children, Jesse, Massa, Elisha, George, William, Betsy, Rhoda who married Joshua Barlor or Barlow and Jemina who married Benjamin Rush. George was the executor, and the probate was filed 9 Sep 1793. The final settlement was made in 1827.
John Thomas and wife Betty of Culpeper County received a lease from Benjamin Rush 18 Sep 1753 . Rent became due 1755. [Culpeper Deeds Book B pp 65-67 film 30943] John's daughter Jemina married a Benjamin Rush,
5 Feb 1781 Culpeper Deed Book K p 355 - John Thomas gives son John three negroes, Harry, Judah and Abraham "for the real good will, love and affection that I have and bear my well beloved son. . ." and for the purpose of enabling him to Raise his children do give him the said three negroes now in his possession"
