Notes
a. Note:   Named in father's will in 1782. He is mentioned as one of the children of John Thomas to receive the money received from the sale of his estate. One account states that he went to Maryland but there is no documentation for this statement.

She quitted her claim to the several bequests and devises made to her in the Will of her said Husband deceased, and Elected in Lieu thereof, her dower or third part of the deceased’s estate both real and personal.
The inventory of William’s estate, with Elizabeth Thomas, as executrix, was conducted 29 March 1776 by John Manning and Zach. McDonald. Reference was made to next of kin Susannar Rigg with his son George Thomas being in the regular service at Annapolis. The value of the estate amounted to 320/14/1 ½ Pounds. Unfortunately Magruder in his Colonial Abstracts also attaches this inventory to the probate of another William Thomas who died the same year with a wife Ann and 14 children, who also lived in Charles County. The second man died in October 1776.

  Land References
There are not many references to William Thomas, and the first seems to be a lease which was executed in 1743 but not recorded until 1762 when William obtained the rights to the lease.
Deed Book S #3 refers to a 3 life lease in 1743 to Elizabeth Goley, her son Thomas Goley and Sarah, her daughter, from Richard Molyneux of St Thomas Manor in Charles County. William Thomas was assigned this lease in 1762. The assignment was made by Francis Triplett to William, and Triplett received his assignment from Aaron Nalley who received his right from Elizabeth Nally and Richard Molyneux [the original grantor of the lease].
Page 193. Lease and Assignments. Dec 25. 1743 from Richard Molyneux of St. Thomas’ Manor in Charles County, Gentleman, to Elizabeth Goley of Charles County, Spinstress, for divers good causes, the lease of part of St. Thomas Manor, lying in Charles County, bounded by a sycamore tree near Potomack River side, Peter Riggs line, Robert Sinnet’s line, thence with sd River, containing about 123 acres. To have to to hold, for the whole term of 3 lives, viz, of the sd Elizabeth Goley, Thomas Goley, her son, and Sarah, her daughter, commencing today, paying yearly to sd Molyneux, each Dec 25, 1000 lbs of tobacco and 100 lbs of good corn-fed port and 2 fat capons or 3 fat hens at St. Thomas Manor house yearly. If the rent is more than 30 days in arrears, Molyneux may distrain on any of the goods and chattels of sd Elizabeth Goley. Elizabeth Goley agrees, within 3 years, to plant an orchard of old apply trees, and if any of the trees die or becomes blighted, others are to be planted in their stead. Sd Elizabeth Goly may not cut or sell any timber trees other than for the use of the plantation. Molyneux may cut and carry off any timber trees for his or their own use. Elizabeth Goley shall attend and do him homage at all courts to be held at sd Manor, when summoned thereto. Signed Richard Molyneux Wit. Thomas Pulton, James Ashby.

I assign all my right to the within lease to Aaron Nally, for value received. Signed Dec 14, 1759. Elizabeth Nally
I assign to Francis Triplett all my right to the within lease, for the consideration of 5500 lbs of crop tobacco Signed Feb 17, 1759. Aaron Nally Wit Danl. Jenifer of St. Thos., Geo Dent
Charles County Sep 28, 1762. I hereby assign to William Thomas, all my right to the within lease, having received 10,000 lbs of crop tobacco. Signed Francis Triplett Wit Richard Harrison, Danl Jenifer of St Thos Recorded Sep 4, 1771
St Thomas Manor was originally granted to agents of the Society of Jesus in the seventeenth century. The land consisted of 500 acres on the east bank of Port Tobacco River which was maintained by the Jesuits as St. Ignatius church. The 3500 acres on the west bank was leased to tenant farmers. About 1742 Richard Molyneux, who is described both as a reverend and a gentleman, made a number of leases in that area. Most of the leases were recorded at the time they were made, but apparently the Goley lease was not recorded until it came into William Thomas’ possession. It is possible that Sarah Goley may be his wife, but this is pure supposition on my part at this time. The fact that William Thomas’ inventory referred to a plantation of leased land would account for the absence of his name from the land records.
In V 5 1765-75, is a Deed of Gift from William Thomas to his son, George Thomas.
I, William Thomas of Charles County, planter, for the natural love I have for my son, George Thomas of Charles County, planter, and for 5 shillings, I give George the following: 1 Negro slave named Mary otherwise called Moll, and one other Negro slave named Robert (the son of sd slave Mary), on condition that George shall, without any hindrance, allow me to have and use sd 2 slaves and the future increase of Mary, during my natural life, and to take the profits arising from them or their labor, to my own proper use. Signed Nov. 12, 1766--William Thomas. Wit - Richd Harrison, Robert Harrison. Recorded Nov 13, 1766 [Deed Book O #3p 119]
This seems to be our William of Maryland as the other William did not have a son George. There is a planter George Thomas with a son George who is one of the early settlers, but I find no relationship between the two families.
