Notes
a. Note:   n this as the ancestral marriage without looking at the records. Thomas Cobe, listed in the IGI, was not Nancy's first husband, but was the spouse of Nancy, daughter of Isaac Hurt of Amelia Co., VA. Nancy of Madison Co. was reportedly md to an unnamed spouse who, according to his dau. Louisa, took his own life before she was 6 yrs. old, and her mother would not tell his name. Record of his existance appears to have been removed from the records of the area.
However, more recent research has raised suspicions that this husband never existed and that there was no first marriage. At any rate, there seems to have been a great deal of family discomfort as to the identity of Louisa's father. Nancy md. 28 Nov 1826 Enoch Jenkins at Madison Co., VA and reportedly took her youngest daughter, Lutie to live with them. It is more probable that Lutie was Louisa's twin and did not live past infancy. Enoch Jenkins appeared at the time of Louisa's first marriage and gave his consent as her stepfather.
Nancy married Enoch Jenkins after her first husband died (we have been told he was a suicide, but have located no information on him). It may be that the Madison County Court minutes will give some clues on this problem. Abstracts of Madison County, Virginia Marriage Bonds 1793-1800, Sparico, Ruth and Sam, Pub. McLean, Virginia:Sparico 1986, FHL # 975.538 P25, pg 19. This entry states that Nancy's brother, Reuben, wrote a letter consenting to the marriage.
What information we have on Nancy was supplied by her daughter, Louisa. Dates given in her records do not match documents--e.g., her record showed Nancy as born 1791 but her parents did not marry until 1798. While the relationships given by Louisa check out, some people who she named have not been located in the records.
~Louisa was sealed to her maternal grandparents.
Recently, there has been some speculation that Louisa's father was her mother's cousin, James Corbin Hurt, but there is currently no proof of this.
Note:   Research turned up a Nancy Hurt who married in Amelia County. Some family members have take
