Massey's son, John Thomas III may have been his grandfather's favorite as evidenced by the bequests i nJohn Thomas's will and by his deed of gift. He married a Susannah to whom he was still married in 1795 when they sold the property on Doubletop Mountain (which his grandfather had originally purchased in Culpeper County) to Thomas Wallace. [Madison County Deed Book, pp. 10-12] As he is listed after Reuben in the heir settlements, he seems to be the second child. Two children can be proven for him: Lucy, who is named in her great-grandfather's will, and Frances who married William Thompson in 1798.( The marriage record shows that Susanner Thomas - her mother - gaver permission). Green identifies his son Massey as the Massey who married Elizabeth Barbour (although the account gives her name as Barlow) in Madison County in 1785.

This deed appears in the Culpeper County records. At the time the deed was recorded, three men were asked to personally visit Susannah to secure her acknowledgment of the deed [dower right].
In 1796 John and Susannah sold 205 acres of land left him by his grandfather John Thomas on Robison River on the west side of Double Top Mountain. Henry Lewis was a witness. The same provisions were made for securing Susannah's consent. [Madison County Deeds vol 2 pp 10-12]. Deed specifically refers to property left him by grandfather. It is located on the south side of the south fork of Robison River and north and west on the side of Double Top mountain. Among the witnesses were Benjamin Dickin and Henry Lewis
