Note: !1. Will of James Crow, Madison Co. VA Will Book 1, pg 139-141. Executors named in will were Elizabeth, along with friends Henry Hill, William Hurt and Joel Yowell, with Augustine Lillard, Ambrose Ship and Benjamin Sisk as witnesses. Henry Hill had apparently deceased or otherwise left the area when the will was probated 27 Jul 1797, and Dennis Crow was appointed an executor in his place in the inventory and administration of the will. The will was dated 11 Apr 1791. Will dated 11 April 1791 names beloved wife Elizabeth; son Dennis Crow; son John Crow; son William Crow; daughter Sarah Thomas; son James Crow; daughters Frances Lillard and Elizabeth Crigler. His friends Henry Hill and William Hurt and Joel Yowell as well as his wife to be executors.Henry Hill was not available at the time of probate 27 July 1791 and Dennis Crow was appointed in his stead. Bond of five thousand pounds posted by Elizabeth Crow, Dennis Crow and Joel Yowell.Sale of the estate to Dennis Crow, William Crow, Reuben Crigler, Benjamin Thomas, Sarah Thomas, Jacob Crigler, Dennis Lillard, Thomas Tignor, Thomas Chapman, recorded 4 January 1813.Will reads as follows:In the name of God Amen, I James Crowe of the County of Madison and State of Virginia being in perfect Mind and Memory do Constitute and make this my last will and Testament and in the first place I yeald my soul to Almighty God, that gave it me, my body to be buried in a Cristian like manner at the Discretion of my Executors hereafter mentioned and what Worldly goods it hath been pleased God to bestow on me I dispose of as followeth vizItem I lend to my beloved wife Elizabeth hole of my Estate both real and Personal so long as she lives a widow and after her Second Mariage or death to be divided as followethItem I give and bequeath to my son Dennis Crow the Tract of Land I now live on one Bed and furniture, one Negro Girl by the name of Judah also my still to him his heirs and assigns forever.Item I give and bequeath to my son John Crow my Tract of land lying on the Blue Ridge near ___ Gap to him his heirs and assigns foreverItem I give and bequeath to my son William Crow the Tract of Land I purchased of Benjamin Lillard on Roccey Run one bed & furniture to him his heirs and assigns foreverItem I give unto my Daughter Sarah Thomas one negro Boy the name of Lemon to her, her heirs foreverItem I give unto my son James Crow one Negro Boy by the name of Solomon which he has now in Possession to him his heirs and assigns foreverItem it is my Will that the Residue of my Estate shall be sold and the money Arising from the same to be equally Divided among my Children as followeth Dennis, John, Frances Lillard, Sarah Thomas, Elisabeth Crigler, and my Son William deducting from France Lillard's part Fourteen pounds Twelve shillings and from Sarah Thomas part Fourteen pounds Twelve shillings & from Elizabeth Crigler's part Fourteen pounds. And also from John Crow part Eleven pounds and a Bill that I have Obligated my Estate to pay for him to one Beattie the sum not fully known to me and should there arise any cost more Thereon it shall also be deducted from his part and further it is will & desire that the part of my estate hereby given to my Daughters Frances Lillard and Sarah Thomas as vested in the hands of my Executors to dispose of as they think best for their support and that these, Frances Lillard and Sarah Thomas may dispose of the same by this Last will and Testament to such of their Childre!n as they may think proper and in Case either or both of them fail to make such will to be equally divided between all their Children.And also I appoint my beloved Wife Elizabeth Executor and Trusty Friends Henry Hill and William Hurt and Joel Yowell Executors of this my last will and Testament.
