Louisa Hurt in her records stated that she had been reared by her grandparents after her father's death. When Louisa's son George did the temple work, he gave the date of 1769 for James' birth. In 1810 census listing James is listed in age group 26-45. Jane Murray gives 1778 in her reconstruction of family. Date on Effie Dunham pedigree chart is 10 Mar 1749 (origin unknown) but this is a generation earlier than is likely. 1769 date is used, although he could have been younger.
James Hurt Sr of Madison Co, Virginia was an executor of the estate of William Hurt in a 1807 sale; a James Hurt is among purchasers of the estate of William Hurt in 1820; William Hurt's will dated 9 April 1811, proved 24 Sep 1812, does not name James as an heir, but he is listed in the sale of the estate of William's widow Sarah (who died intestate). He conveys land to James Hurt Jr in 1825 in Madison Co. The repetition of given names makes for some confusion in identification.
The settlement of Sarah's estate shows that James Hurt, brother of Frances Bradley, is an executor. Will Book 4 p 439 lists heirs as Frances Bradley, Ann Hurt, Sarah Teaches, Mary Hurt, and Elizabeth Thomas dated 28 Aug 1823. The estate value was $1,639.64. The estate was sold to Ann Hurt, Polly Hurt, John Weakley, Simeon Chapman, Augustine Bradley, Augustine Lillard, Benjamin Thomas, James Hurt, William Hurt, Joel Hurt, Leonard Barnard and Sarah Teaches. The remainder of the estate was divided among the children, excluding son James (who had probably received his share earlier)..
In 1787 he is shown with one poll and three slaves; in 1810 he has a household of ten persons which is reduced to eight in 1820.
Hurt is named as a member of the Baptist church. Historians indicate that many early Anglican records were destroyed or lost at the time of the Revolution and that Baptist congregations displaced them in the minds of the people.
