Note: homas, and his surviving siblings, John Thomas III, Jesse Thomas, William Thomas, Massey Thomas and Susannah Thomas signed an agreement of the heirs of Massey Thomas, allowing their mother, Elizabeth the use of their father's estate during her lifetime. The estate was finally settled in 1798, suggesting that their mother had died before that date.[Madison County Deed Book2, pg. 253] !2. Will of John Thomas I was probated 9 Apr. 1785, Culpeper Co. VA; children were named in will along with some children's spouses and grandchildren. !3. Will of Massey Thomas dated 1776; will probated Aug 1776, Culpeper Co. VA. Massey Thomas does not appear in the records until1776 when we find his inventory recorded in Culpeper Will Book B, p. 134. He is the first to die of the four sons who are named in John Thomas I's will, and his early death may have been due to an accident. He would have been born about 1720 i Washington parish with the rest of the family as his father did not move to King George County until 1742, and the date of his first appearance in Culpeper is not known. He may have been living with his parents and assisting them. We do not know much about Massey's family. The two agreements of heirs in 1782 and 1797 show the same listing. As Susannah's name has not changed, she may not have married, at least not until after 1797, and it is likely that she never married. There is a short account of the family in Raleigh Travers GREEN'S GENEALOGICAL AND HISTORICAL NOTES ON CULPEPER COUNTY, in which his son Massey's family is listed. Based upon the probable age of Reuben, who seems to be the oldest son, he was born about 1720 to 1725. At the time of his father's will, he is dead, and there are bequests to his widow and some of his children. John refers to Elizabeth, widow of Massey, and makes specific bequests to several of his children. Culpeper County Deed Book M page 185 dtd 21 Jun 1784 the heirs of Massey Thomas assign rights in father's estate to mother Elizabeth.Signed by Reuben Thomas, John Thomas, William Thomas, Massey Thomas, Jesse Thomas, and Susannah Thomas with witnesses Richard Dickin, Benjamin Dickin and Henry Lewis Junior. Massey died intestate as only inventory given in will. The final estate settlement in 1798 was made by Henry Lewis Sr who paid the heirs 107 pounds, 18 shillings and 8 pence in settlement of their claims. By this date Elizabeth would be deceased. British Mercantile Claims for 1775-1803 [as published in The Virginia Genealogist v. 29, p 138] states regarding claims of John Glassell "James Thomas, Junr., Culpeper. "This debt was paid to Andrew Glassell about two years ago at the same time the debt due of Massey Thomas to John Glassell was paid. The principal was only received in full satisfaction, the bond being lost. Mr. Glassell was authorized to get anything he could."
