 At age 17, Samuel was a military scout in Captain Sawyer's Company in the Revolutionary War, enlisting at Reading, Vermont. His brother-in-law, Levi Bishop served in the same company. He applied for his veteran's pension in 1818..
  He was recorded in a number of land transactions in Reading between Jan 1791 and 1829 and appeared in five censuses for Reading between 1790 and 1830. All of his children were born in Reading and the dates of their births are from the Reading town records.
  About 1830, he and eight of his children moved west to St. Lawrence County, New York and settled in a hamlet founded by his son, John, named Brookdale on the Stockholm - Norfolk town line. Samuel did not buy any land in New York. Apparently he and his wife lived with one of their children. He and his wife both died there and are buried in the Brookdale Cemetery.
