Continued: Abraham Crane's name appears in the Church Book of the First Presbyterian Church of Middletown, Orange County, New York for the years of 1817 and 1818 as occupying pew # 11 with his family on the lower level of the meeting house. His son, Alfred W. Crane is shown seated in pew # 7 in 1820, # 11 in 1821 and # 10 in 1822. His brother, Stephen (Steven in some cases) continually has the use of pew # 16 from 1817 through 1821. By 1824, no more Crane names are appearing in this record. It would appear that the Crane family began immigrating to Ohio around 1822-23. On the lists of church members, Pheobe, wife of Benjamin Crane appears in 1793, and Stephen Crane is recorded there by 1798. He is recorded in "List of Male Inhabitants Over the Age of 21 in 1835" purchased, copied and indexed by George R. Cryder, 1988 for the Delaware Co., Ohio Historical Society, Inc., et al. as being #85, pg. 4, Berkshire Twp. and is shown as Abraham P. Crain. The deed books for Delaware Co., Ohio show four land purchases by Abraham Crane. The first was 12 Jan 1835, Deed Bk. vol. 12, pg. 376 in Trenton Twp, which he purchased from Eunice Stansbury. On 30 May 1838, he purchased another property from John Lacock, Deed Bk. vol. 17, pg. 141. On 12 Feb 1839, he purchased property in Berkshire Twp. from Anson Hammon and Henry Patee (document on file). 15 Jan 1838, he purchased the land in Trenton Twp. which appears to be the property with a sawmill as is bordered on the south by the Rattlesnake River. Along the margin of this last document is written "Del'd to Benj. R. Ward Dec 27, 1839. The survey map for 1949 shows that this land is NNE from property owned by E. W. Doty, administrator of Abraham's estate. Copy of Abraham Crane's Estate Administration dated 29 July 1844,was received by mail 31 Dec 2001 from the Delaware County Historical Society, 157 E. William St., P.O. Box 317, Delaware, OH 43015-0317, Marilyn Cryder, Research Volunteer and correspondent. Of interest in the documents were amounts paid to a E.R. Winans - $5.00, W.W.(William W.) Winans -$17.37 and another payment of $20.00; a payment to S. Crane of $121.77.Abraham Crane died intestate but with some estate in Sunbury (then a twp., now a town), Delaware Co., Ohio. One item of interest is the statement "To taxes paid on saw mill and 15 acres of Land sold by A. Crane by article by article to Silas gore who refused to pay s’d taxes and I had to pay them." His estate was administered by B. R. Ward and his affairs settled between 20 Feb 1840 and 29 July 1844. Persons listed as receiving payment from the estate include N. Willson, arbitrator, E.R. Winans, W.W. Winans, E. Carney, S. Crane and others. W.W.Winans is possibly a relative of Abraham's wife, Phebe Winans. There are a considerable number of Winans families living in the county at that time. S. Crane may be Abraham's younger brother, Stephen Crane. Also mentioned is an amount of $8.00, not collectable, owed to John Gilpin. This name is worth consideration, as Abraham's son, Alfred Winans Crane, is reported to have married a Sarah Gilpin or Galpin. The information on Abraham's estate was received from research volunteer Marilyn Cryder, Delaware County Historical Society, 157 E. William St., Delaware, Ohio 43015-0317 in a letter dated 28 Dec 2001. He was named in his father's 1821 will, but none of his children were named. Information given by his daughter, Mary, on the 1880 Census shows both Abraham and his wife as being born in Pennsylvania.
