Notes
a. Note:   w York Church Book as occupying half of pew # 7 on the main floor of the church on 29 Apr 1820. His name is written "Alford W. Crane" in this first entry, but is changed to Alfred W. Crane the following April when he and his family were assigned pew # 11, previously occupied by his father, Abraham Crane. On 20 Apr 1822 he appears to be the A.W. Crane in pew # 10, and is not recorded further after that date. This would suggest that he was at least 21 years of age and probably married by 1820, making him one of the older children in Abraham's family.
In the 1830 Census, Alfred and his family are living near Abraham in Sunberry Twp., Delaware County, Ohio, with 2 sons between the ages of 5 and 10 and a daughter under the age of 5. He and his wife are listed as being between 30 and 40. He does not show up in the 1840 Census for that area, but Sally Crane, widow, is found in nearby Genoa Twp with children 1 male (5-10), 2 females (5-10).
In a letter received 31 Dec 2001 from the Delaware, Ohio Historical Society, there is a "Final account of John H. Doty, Administrator of Alfred W. Crane, decd., dated Aug. 8, 1845. On his father's estate administration dated 29 July 1844, there is a note that "$2.68 in taxes was paid on a sawmill and 15 acres of land sold by A. Crane by estate to Silas Gone, who refused to pay sd. taxes" and the estate administrator had to pay them, indicating that Alfred was probably alive at the time of his father's death. He may have died within a short time after that.
The administration papers for Alfred's estate contain the following statement:
"I Leonard H. Cowles, Master Commissioner do certify that I have examined the final accounts of John H. Doty, Administrator on the estate of Alfred W. Crane dec’d. and find
the admr. should be charg’d $1166.70 And that he should be credited for mony paid for s’d estate 1162.65 Leaving a balance of only four dollars and five cents $ 4.05 In his hands, which should be allowd the administrator for extra services in settling the land claim of Charles Dodge against the estate.. Which would leave no balance in his hands.
 August 8th 1845 Leonard H. Cowles
For $1.00 Paid Master Commissioner in
 Charge ~ "
Alfred's estate was settled (intestate) by 8 Aug 1845 by Leonard H. Cowles, "master commissioner" and John H. Doty, administrator of the estate. No mention of children is made in any of the documentation. However, there is a "Sally Copland, widow" who is creditied with a year support of #194.00 She was Alfred's widow, but may have already been Copeland's widow as well, since she is shown as a widow on the 1850 census. It is unclear whether the statement indicated she had been widowed for one year before she remarried or that she was presently widowed again. Information obtained by correspondence from volunteer researcher Marylin Cryder of the Delaware County Historical Society, 157 E. William St., P.O. Box 317, Delaware, OH 43015-0317 in a letter dated 28 Dec 2001. See document file.
