The Cox/Summers group of Okies arrived in Blythe on – November 1936
The Summers family consisting of Grandma, Grandpa, Bob, Clyde, DL & Tommy returned to Oklahoma on – June 1937
They returned to Blythe on – September 1938
Our grandparents and your dad moved to Beaumont in – 1950 – don’t have month – the following to help correct your dad’s ‘residence’ in Ancestry.com.
Your dad lived in Blythe and went to school there until they moved. I had already started going to school (1943 – first grade) before they left. My mother was working at a laundry and after school I would go to Grandma’s house. Your dad and I would walk about a mile from the bus stop to their house together. This was after they moved from the French Ranch to farther west on West Chanslor Way, about halfway between Arrowhead and Neighbors Blvds. Their house was built on a sand hill. I don’t have a picture of the house but the attached is of me, Joe Casey (Clarence’s Son) and Sam Winters. We are standing next to the house. The car in front is Verna Winters, a 1937 Chevy coupe, the other car is Grandma’s and it is a 1938 Plymouth sedan. Neither Grandma nor Grandpa drove so one of the “boys” (our uncles) had to drive them. Picture taken probably 1945 -46.
They didn’t have electricity, so grandma would have to pump water from an old hand pump. She had a washing machine with a little gasoline engine. It sat right out in the open on a piece of plywood. They didn’t have propane, so she had to heat the wash water in an old wash tub sitting on those big tomato juice cans with wood she had cut. Great-grandma Edwards lived with them. To take baths they heated water on the wood cook stove and poured it into a big washtub. They used kerosene lamps to see at night. They had an outhouse for a bathroom – I hated to use it because they didn’t buy toilet paper – they just took out the old Sears’ catalogue and magazines to use. They kept an old cow for milk. Grandpa wouldn’t eat “light bread” (store bought) so Grandma had to bake biscuits every day. Grandma would separate the cream from the mild and churn butter in an old half gallon canning jar by sitting and shaking it back and forth. Instead of bacon, they bought “side pork” – the same part of the pig just not smoked and cut in thick slices. When we got there after school there would be leftover side pork and biscuits sitting on the table. They had an icebox to keep perishables in and either Clyde or DL was supposed to bring a 25 pound block of ice when they came home from work.
Our Grandma Summers had a hard life – raising all those kids and keeping the family running.
While revisiting all this in my mind, I began thinking how fortunate I am for having lived to know so many of our family members.
Oh, when you send this back with your house address, I’ll fill in the blanks.
Make sure it is real – otherwise a family heirloom will be lost.
It will come via UPS. – a big surprise – well maybe not big – but real old
