!NOTE: Recieved a email from Gerald Cox, her great grandson by her son Charles. This is what he had to say: Great-grandma Summers was blind. Despite this she regularly traveled by train to visit her several children. My mother described her as a “big woman”; but never amplified on exactly what that meant. I assume she was both tall and also heavy. The house that our grandparents and children were living in at the time had a front porch all the way across the front. Strangely there were two doors leading out onto the porch. Great-grandma got around and helped with household chores, orienting herself by touch in a particular room and then counting steps. She was injured when she went out one of the front doors thinking it was the other. While counting steps to rocking chair on the porch, she fell off the end of the porch and broke her hip. As I recall, my mother said she never went to a doctor, but lay in bed for some time. She would say, “Charles, I believe I can walk now.” They would get her up and she would try but couldn’t and she eventually succumbed to her age, injuries and lack of exercise.
