Note: Ref: VG p53 Note: Charles V, appointed him governer of Holland, Zeeland, Utercht, and West Frisland. Philip II on his accessuion, accused Willam of Orange of stirring up the States-General against the Royal measures. In 1561, William definitely headed the opposition in the Netherlands to Philip, aand urged the Regent, Maegeret of Perma, to carry out certain neccessary reforms. William retired to Nassau and watched the course of events. In 1578 William and Archduke Matthias were defeated by the Spanish Troops at Gembloux. William then induced the Roman Catholic provinces to make the union od Arras in January, 1579, and to leave the Provinves, which at once formed the union of Utrucht: but William himself was assassinated (1584)
