a. Note:   BIOGRAPHY: Was third child, and only son of his parents who survived extreme infancy, was apprenticed with Mr. William Sheaff, a wine merchant, at age 14. When he died he had about one million and a quarter dollars, and had done much in the way of philanthrophy.

 Herringshaw's Encyclopedia of American Biography of the Nineteenth Century. page 96:
 BECK, PAUL, philanthropist, was born in 1760 in Philadelphia, Pa. He acquired a large fortune in the wine trade, and for several years filled the office of port warden of Philadelphia. He was one of the founders of the Philadelphia academy of fine arts, a benefactor of the deaf and dumb institution of that city; president of the American Sunday School union; and a contributor to various other charitable and religious undertakings. He died Dec. 22, 1844, in Philadelphia, Pa.

 Philadelphia gentleman, Paul Beck, born 1760, died 1844, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was conspicuous as a philanthropist and public spirited citizen; was a benefactor of the Deaf and Dumb Institute of the City; president of the American Sunday School Union; one of the founders of the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts, and for some years postmaster. At the time of his death he was one of the wealthiest men of Philadelphia, and it was in great measure through his influence that the Delaware and Chesapeake canal was constructed on its large scale.His daughter, Susannah P. Beck, born November 10, 1786, married Daniel Lammot on May 15, 1806. One of their daughters, Margaretta Elizabeth married Alfred Victor du Pont; another , Mary Augusta married Thomas Hounsfield.
