Note: BIOGRAPHY: Was third child, and only son of his parents who survived extreme infancy, was apprenticed with Mr. William Sheaff, a wine merchant, at age 14. When he died he had about one million and a quarter dollars, and had done much in the way of philanthrophy. ------------------------------------------------------------- Herringshaw's Encyclopedia of American Biography of the Nineteenth Century. page 96: BECK, PAUL, philanthropist, was born in 1760 in Philadelphia, Pa. He acquired a large fortune in the wine trade, and for several years filled the office of port warden of Philadelphia. He was one of the founders of the Philadelphia academy of fine arts, a benefactor of the deaf and dumb institution of that city; president of the American Sunday School union; and a contributor to various other charitable and religious undertakings.
