"Early American Series" Early New Jersey vol.1, 1600-1819 (HBLL: H/R Ref/ F133.E2) lists the following Abner Smiths: 1) Smith, Ab. Cumberland Co., NJ 21010-11010-00 1800 2) Smith, Aeener Cumberland Co., NJ 11220-30110-00 1780 3) Smith, Abner Cumberland Co., NJ 11201-12110-00 1800 4) Smith, Abner Cumberland Co., Deerfield Twp., 1774 LAND: I have a deed wherein James Smith sold 1/4 acre to Owen Elmer 1 Aug 1862. His wife was Elizabeth, according to the deed. Also mentioned in the deed are Aaron Smith and wife, Theophilus E. Smith, Theodosia Smith and Edmund Smith and wife. These were the brothers and sisters of James Smith. James Smith was the 1st cousin of Owen Elmer, my 3rd g grandfather. -------------------------------------------- Hello Mary Some comments about the information that you sent on our Smith line. (1) I have the Abner Smith who married Jane Elmer as being born Jan 6 ,1777. This information is from the Charles E Sheppard papers and references Jonathan Smiths Bible. I thank that this is more accurate than a date of 1767. Would Abner have been 40 years old when he married in 1807. Not unless it was a second marriage ? (30 even seems old for those days) (2) Cumberland Co. Clerks Book has Abner Smith and Mary Barnett married to each other Aug 20 1808. So there are at least 3 Abner Smiths from Cumberland Co. as yours was still there and mine had gone to Ohio. (3) The Abner Smith(1) [ your note ]shown in the 'Early American Series Vol. 1 would be the father of my Abner and your William Smith. An inventory of his property indicated that this Abner died before April 1777. (4) The Abner Smith(4) [your note] is my Abner Smith and his family who went to Ohio in 1805. The children and the parents are in the correct age and sex columns. (5) That leaves Abener(2) and Ab.( 3) Smith as unknowns. To sum up I feel that Abner SMITH born abt. 1713, was the father of William and Abner Smith (and others). William born about 1740 was the father of your Abner born about 1777. and Abner Jr. born about 1754 is my ancestor. Please give me your comments. John Newbright
