John Richard Saunders, present attorney-general of Virginia, has become a familiar figure in Richmond, though he still retains his legal residence at Saluda, where for almost thirty years he has enjoyed an extensive law Practice and is also a banker. Mr. Saunders was born in King and Queen County December 19, 1869. He is of old English and Virginia Colonial ancestry. His family several generations ago was closely connected with that of James Madison. His grandfather, REUBEN SAUNDERS, was a man of wealth and influence, who lived all his life in Caroline County, where he married Lavinia Saunders, of the same name but not related. They reared four sons and four daughters. One of these was Major WILLIAM ALEXANDER SAUNDERS, who was born in Caroline County, December 26, 1829, and as a young man moved to King and Queen County, where he spent the rest of his life.
