Note: John S Hoskins No Hoskins or Haskins in Wayne in 1840 Census, nor 1830 or 1820 so this is a transplanted name, maybe explaining the trend of locals to waiver between the written version of Haskins then Hoskins. First mention is 7th February 1846 voted in the election that was held at Nahunta Depot in the Nahunta District. John S Haskins was voter #51, Judith's brothers, James Dickinson and Henry Dickinson being numbers 49 and 58, respectively, in the same district. John S Hoskins appears on the 1848 Wayne Insolvent Tax list. The lone Hoskins / Haskins in the NC Wayne 1850 census is on page 190B (same page as Susan Hamilton and Mary Williams(on), who are Judith's aunts, as well as Sarah Bryan(t) and Susan Privett, Judith's first cousins. Jno. S. Hoskins/Haskins appears in family and dwelling 673 headed by a Mr. Barnes, Merchant, with several unrelated workers among them: Jno. S. Hoskins/Haskins 35 male white tailor birth: NC reads Nancy Ellice (Ellis?) 35 female white birth: NC non-reader He is not found in either Wayne or Wilson in 1860 (or anywhere that I have checked) but in Wilson can be found in 1860: 1860 NC Wilson Co Census BLACK CRK DIST page 175a family and dwelling 30 Nancy Hoskins 45 female white birth: NC non reader whether this is the same Nancy as Nancy Ellis from 1850 and represents a subsequent wife of J S Hoskins is unclear, backing up to 1840, also unlear if any relation of this John S Hoskins to a lone finding in NC: 1840 NC Warren Co Census page 19 John S Hoskins white male age 20-30 two others in household, white females 20-30 and 40-50 Again, maybe no connection to the man later in Wayne County. Could be him with two blood relatives, or him with a first wife and mother-in-law, or him with two unrelated individuals, anything, really.
