Note: Eva was an independent and precocious child, always open to new adventures. She volunteered be a live-in babysitter for neighbors children at a very young age, before finishing grade school. Since she learned to speak English well; she would serve as a translator for her employees who owned ranches and farms. She would also volunteer for farm tasks as well, such as turning eggs at a chicken ranch for a dollar a day. Her income greatly helped her family after her father died.
Eva married young and moved to Van Horn with her first husband Pete O�ate. The obligation of caring for his elderly grandmother proved to be overwhelming for the young couple and Eva left without a word, even to her own family. She stayed away, living in Del Rio. She eventually returned to the Balmorhea area where she worked at the Kingston Ranch. Chapo delivered groceries to the ranch and was surprised to find her there. He invited her to a local dance. Eva adored dancing and he loved watching her dance.
