 Rice Vass of Spotsylvania county and Ann, his wife, deeded land, of which 57 a. held by Mary, widow of Philip Vincent Vass dec'd, as tenant in dower, and the remainder held by the said Rice Vass...etc.
  Spotsylvania DB P, p. 330, deed dated 29 Dec 1800, "Rice Vass & Peggy, his wife" sold their land on Pike Run (60 acres) in Spotsylvania Co. to James King:
 "one certain tract or parcel of land wherein the said Rice Vass formerly lived lying and being in the county of Spotsylvania"..."containing by estimation sixty acres "...."except the....burying ground around the graves of Philip V. Vass and Ann Vass, former wife of said Rice Vass for the Family of the said Deceased to bury in, & said Rice Vass & Peggy his wife."
  Rice Vass first appeared on the Monroe County, Virginia personal property tax list in 1802, one year after his son, William. Rice's first land transaction in Monroe Co. found in DB B, p. 37: Rice Vass bought 154 acres from Robert Campbell etux per deed dtd 18 Dec 1804. Rice and Peggy Rice sold 100 acres of this land to Gilson Legg in 1805 (Monroe Co. DB B, p. 304)

  Rice C. Vass appeared on the Monroe County personal property tax lists from 1802 to 1815 and not afterwards. Rice Vass appeared on the Monroe County land tax records in 1816 for 54 acres but on the 1817 land tax list for the 54 acres is listed "Rice Vass heirs."
  Monroe Co., Virginia (now West Virginia), Will Book 6, pp. 209-210:
 Will of Rice's son, William, dtd 31 Dec 1852, names his nine brothers and one sister: John, George, Robert, Leland, Boswell, Rice, Elliot, James, Phillip and a grand niece, Nancy Roles (daughter of Susan Vass Roles). Susan was the daughter of John Vass and his first wife, Mary Cathrae. John was the brother of William who wrote the will.
 William Vass' will was proved by the Monroe County court in September 1854 and was recorded as follows:
  "I William Vass Senr. of the County of Monroe and State of Viginia do make this my last will & testament, to wit,
 I desire that all my personal property be sold as soon as convenient after my decease, and after paying my Funeral Expenses and my just debts including any debts which may be due me be equally divided among such of my Brothers, except my brother Philip, as may be living at my death & the children of those who are dead - My Brother John's part one half amount the children of his first wife, and the other among those of his second wife, to be paid to the daughters as they arrive to the age of 18 or get married. To the Sons at the age of 21 or when they get married if they marry before they are 21. My Brother George's part, one half to the children of his first wife and the other half to be given to him as he stands in need of it for his support.
 My Brother Robert's part to his children & July Ann's part of it to her daughter Angeline. My Brother Leland's part to his widow and her two children. My Brother Elliott's part to his widow and to his children by her.
 I desire that Seventy five Dollars be paid to Nancy Roles who was named after my sister to be laid out for her by her Father Mordecai Roles in a Young Horse & Saddle.
 I further desire that one dollar be paid my Brother Philip and he not to have the benefit of any other part of my Estate.
 I further desire that my part of the Farm on which I reside together with a piece of land bought of Robt Skaggs & added thereto may be sold on a reasonable credit & the amount thereof be equally divided among my following Brothers as named above to Wit - John, George, Robert, Leland, Boswell, Rice, Elliott & James & the children of those deceased as stated above.
 I hereby appoint Boswell Vass & John Vass my Executors to carry this will into effect. In witness whereof I have hereunder set my hand and seal this 31st day of December 1852.
