"A direction or instruction given to me by my father, for the division or disposal of his estate after his death, this 22nd day of Jan. 1749-50. 1st. that the slaves that Mr. Philip Vincent Vass have in his possession to be settled to him and his children as was purposed when delivered, and after my mother's death, to deliver to the said Vass his desk. 2nd. that Mr. Henry Pendleton have the negro slaves that he have in his possession settled to him, together with a young negro wench about fourteen years old, to be bought for that purpose, and to deliver to him his looking glass. 3rd. that fifty pounds be raised by the profits of the estate and that sum laid out for two young negro girls to be settled on my son Rice Curtis. 4th. that my negroes Cate and Little, with their present and further increase, be equally divided among my three youngest daughters, division to be as they come to age or marry, if I think fit or otherwise at my death. Lastly, all the remainder to myself after my mother's death, both real and personal. The above is what I desire to be done by my son or who he shall leave for that purpose.
