When he was about 20 years old, he immigrated to America, landin g at Philadelphia, August 14, 1728, from the shipMorton House. He pr obably married soon after that, as Tunis was bornin 1730inNew Jerse y. His youngest brother, Johan Gottfried (Godfrey), camein 1735on t he ship Mercury that landed at Philadelphia on May 29, 1735. The sons ofWilhelm Moelich, Johan and his brothers came to America wi th the German Palatines-German Protestants who were persecuted becau se of their religious beliefs.Onegroup fled to Holland. Well treat ed there, they decidedto go to the Dutchsettlement in the new world , New Amsterdam (now New York City). Their ship foundered near Philad elphia and they set out for New Amsterdam on foot. Whentheysaw the rolling hills of Bedminster and Tewksbury, many decidedto settle.Th e Moelich brothers were among them. The name acquired three different spellings. In those days the peopl e in charge of registering land titles and otherlegal documents spell ed names as they sounded. TheBedminsterbranchbecame Mellick, the T ewksbury branch Melick, and a few spelled it Malick. There was astan ding joke in the Melick family that the Mellicks had enough money toa fford2 'l's' in their name. The boys followed their father'sway andwere farmersandtanners. Go ttfried went on to settle inWarren County. Johannes, who arrivedher e with wife Mariah, and children Aaron, Andrew,Fanny, and Maria Cathe rine had a tannery north of Far Hills. They built the,Old StoneHous e, in 1752on which the book, 'The Story of an Old Farm,' by Andrew Me llick is based. Johan Melick was not living in 1755, asthe record ofthe marriage of his daughter Maria K. (Melick) Latharina in that year describes her a sthe daughter of the late Johan P. Melick. Later generations of, "fa ncy Dutch," Melicks andMellicks moved to Pennsylvania and then furthe r west, thoughdecedentsof Johan remained in New Jersey and came wes t via a different route. Nearlythree hundredyears have passed since JohanPeter Moelich firs t setfoot in Tewksbury.Remarkably, nine generation later, in spite ofso many changes in theworld around them, some things are still pre tty much the same. Come sunrise, it's business as usual out on the ol d farm. * JohanPeter Melickwas also known as Peter Melick.
