Cyrus Vaughan, b. 22 Jan 1844 Galesburg, Knox, Ill, d. 03 Jan 1917 Hood River, Hood River, Oregon, m. Martha J. Wood (19 Dec 1858 Sullivan Co., MO-03 Feb 1930 Hood River) on 28 Oct 1876 in Yamhill Co., Oregon in the James Wood home. Martha Wood was a sister of Charlotte Wood, wife of A.S. Vaughan. School teacher and Orchardist. Met his wife while teaching, she was a student. Cyrus managed the grain warehouse at the foot of Wynuski St. at Rogers Landing in Newberg for a number of years. It is said he used to hide the silver money bag in the bush along the trail for fear of being robbed. The wheat was taken to Oregon City to be ground into flour. His boys Robert and Elbert used to carry flour home from the grist mill in Oregon City. Cyrus farmed on the Willamette River but after one of the big floods he moved to West Linn for a time, where his sons worked in the woods. He came to Hood River with most of his family in 1902 and settled on Adams Addition (Dr. Adams also came from Knox Co., Illinois) where they raised strawberries. They built their homes on 13th street, where they still stand. A resident of Hood River for 16 years at his death. Died of paralysis. Slight of build, only about 125 pounds. Suffered from the shakes, probably Parkinsons. Had one leg shorter than the other so he swayed as he walked.
