Note: Our Ancestors probaby belonged Benners L. Ensley (b.1799) who died in 1830. He was the son of John Ensley (b.1778) and Nancy Gibbs Ensley (b.1780). leaving 22 slaves and a plantation known as the Homestead or Hill Plantation in Lake Landing, Hyde County, NC. to his Wife Sarah Ann Henry-Gibbs Ensley,and son. His son Benners A. Ensley is in Hyde County 1850 Census ( 21 years of age ) and owns (slave schedule) 15 slaves including 4 males between the ages of 20 and 25. Hyde Co., NC Wills and Accounts 37. An account of sales of the property of B.L. ENSLEY, dec'd., sold Decr. 23rd 1830 by CAHOON & SPENCER Various buyers at this lengthy sale included: the widow, Saml. WESTON, Hardy SWINDELL, Reuben BERRY, Will BERRY, John HATCH, D.H. BELL, T.M. SCOTT, Joseph McGOWEN, and J.B. ENSLEY. 61. Pursuant to an order of Court at Augt. Term 1831, we have this day allotted and set off to Sarah ENSLEY, widow of the late Benners L. ENSLEY, and Benners Alexander ENSLEY, his son, their distributive share in the Negroes belonging to the estate of the aforesaid Benners L. ENSLEY, as follows, viz: Sarah ENSLEY drew Lot #1 consisting of: Fanny and child William valued at $258.00 John valued at $258.00 Mary valued at $150.00 Edward valued at $125.00 Merrick valued at $400.00 Kit valued at $392.00 Benners Alexander ENSLEY drew Lots # 2 & #3 consisting of: Peg and child Simon valued at $317.00 Sam valued at $242.00 Creasy valued at $120.00 Silvester valued at $125.00 Jack valued at $383.00 George valued at $367.00 Lydia valued at $250.00 David valued at $258.00 Gatsey valued at $141.00 Chatham valued at $125.00 Austin valued at $400.00 Jacob valued at $308.00 Ishmael valued at $258.00 Also two old Negroes, Willoughby & Tamar valued at $150.00 less than nothing for their maintenance and to be deducted. SELBY I find in Hyde's Estate Papers (Archives in Raleigh) that there are papers for Edward Ensley, died circa 1891, with widow Martha Ann. There was a petition on 3 Feb 1892 by Edward S. Ensley; Melvina, wife of Daniel Slade; Annie E., wife of S. L. Gray; Geo. H. Ensley; Mary E., wife of Tom Long; Judith P., wife of Elijah Howard; and William L. Ensley, an infant. The petition was for division of lands in Fairfield and Currituck Townships of Hyde County. There was an account of sales of the estate on 4 & 5 January 1892 by Edward S. Ensley, Administrtor. His wife Nancy was mentioned.
