Note: sband and family in 1838-1839 to travel the "Trail of Tears" with her people. Possible she had a "brood" of children. Jane Smith, I think, is a name her family adopted because it seems the Cherokee were an Indian nation that readily adapted to and adopted White ways---many were ranchers, farmers, etc., and they founded thier own representative government! More research is needed. Corresponds to the tales that Granny (Josephine E. Vaught) used to tell me and Jackie as children that a woman in her ancestral past was an Indian (Granny couldn't remember if it was Seminole or Cherokee). Also got an email from Raymond Pinner that Spisa (Spicey) is buried with her husband near a state park in Ocala. So she must have returned from the Trail. Email recieved Jan 8, 2005 as follows: *** Well hello cousin Steven, I know exactly who you are. I went to your Grandmother's funeral. It rained. I met your Mom and Dad, and your aunts and uncles...nice family. I didn't know your grandmother but felt my duty to pay respects to a Pinner, there are so few of us left in Fla. Yes, the family legend is true. The cherokee womman was our GGGrandmother, she was married to Arthur Pinner and they had a brood of children. She left them all to walk with her people on the Trail of Tears. So, she went back with them when they were moved to the reservations. Her name was Spisa or Spicey Jane Smith. She is listed in the cencus reports in N Fla. Our branch of Pinners have been in America probably since the latter 1600's. My Uncle's trying to pinpoint. He does alot of traveling to SC,NC & GA. I think they had connections to VA also since they married people from there: Rebbeca Raspberry. We are also related to the Pinners in those regions. & TN. The Arthur Pinner(1756-1821) had many kids, and another Arthur (not our direct line-This is the one with the Benjamens and the one that had 2 wives-one was Eliz. Stanley and the Pinner girl that married the Arthur Benton is in our Line. The Hugh & Ike PInners are in our line. The ones from California and the german Penners are not. Neither are the Pinners that came from Eng. to NY. But we may be related since we don't know yet if we came from England or Scotland. My Uncle's still digging. He's not writing his book for money just to do it. Hope any of this helps. I've helped him research and know quite a bit but may need to refresh memory. I know the Danny Blanton and Mat and Joe Pinner postings are from us as well if they come from the Arthur Pinner of SC born in Charleston or Charles Town. Whose father was another Arthur Pinner b 1720 in Charles Town. By the way... My father was Arthur Thomas Pinner. I called your Mom after funeral since she said you were in to this stuff, but guess she forgot to tell you. p.s. your grandmother's middle name is for mother. *** Listed in the Putnam County, Florida 1860 Census, age, birth state given in that document used to calculate birth date. Also, name spelled as "PENNER" in 1860 census may have thrown people off the trail.
Note: Spisa, or Spicey Jane Smith is rumored to be a Cherokee who left her hu
