GREGG, Jr. rickgreg@@gte.net Sept 1997 He sent the following data; James Sr's parents were Scotch/Irish. James gave land for the Slagle church school and cemetery. He opened a store and post office called Brighton. He was a slave owner. Federal soldiers burned the store during the Civil War. Also during that War, a group of guerillas hung James in an apple tree and left him for dead. A slave named Hal PIKE cut him down and he survived. One of the guerillas was Tom PRICE of Bolivar, Missouri. James sons, Dick and Tone planned to kill Tom PRICE, but James talked them out of it. There was considerable relief in the PIKE family when Tom PRICE died. James and his family moved during the Civil War, but were intercepted by the Conferates, who took all their cattle, and paid them in Confederate money. After the War, they tried to return but someone had taken over their land. The family got a lawyer, but were not able to retake the land. 3.
