 1880. 4. According to the 1850 U. S. Census of Lake Co., Indiana: Amanda MELVINA Pierce age 17 (b. 1833) is found living with her brother, Alexander MELVIN Pierce age 14 (b. 1846) at the home of Wheeler PIERCE and his wife Mary. The Census has Amanda and Alexander recorded as last name MELVIN. This was in error, on the part of the Census taker. Amanda and Charles Richard HAYWARD were married 5 years after this 1850 census was taken. According to the house placement in this census, the Wheelers lived 77 houses away from the Thomas HAYWARD home. Thomas, Charles Richard HAYWARD's brother, lives with his wife Emely and son George, and also lives with Charles Richard HAYWARD. Charles is age 34, at this time, 17 years older than Amanda.
