a. Note:   Alexander J. Smith and Jane Rice Bricken were both born in KY. He was born in Barron Co., KY 22 June 1798, the son of Isaac and Martha Smith. Jane was born in Adair Co., KY, the daughter of William Anderson and Elizabeth (Hardwick) Bricken on 17 Jan 1804. Alex and Jane were married in 1825. Sons Benjamin and Isaac were born in Green Co., KY.
 In the fall of 1830 they moved to Randolph Co., MO. Shortly afterwards Mr. Smith entered a claim to a tract of Government land 12 miles north of the present town of Salisbury. The Smiths were among the very first settlers in that part of Chariton Co. Bee Branch Sect #2, now Cockrell Twp. They continued to reside there until their deaths.
 Alexander Smith was one of the honored and influential citzens of the county, serving for 25 years in the office of Justice of the Peace. He also gave effective service in the office of deputy sheriff. His five sons were gallent soldiers of the Confederacy during the War between the States.
 George served under General Sterling Price. Both Alex and Jane were Baptists in religious faith.
 Both are buried in the Fitzgerald Cemetery near their home.
